How Does It Work?
Healthmail is configured to be easy to use and improve electronic communications to the benefit of patients and clinicians. Healthmail works within a private bounded network with a defined set of connect agencies.
Transport Layer Security
The connection between the Healthmail server and all other connected agencies, e.g. the HSE and voluntary hospital servers, is secured using Transport Layer Security (TLS). TLS provides an encrypted tunnel between the mail servers, ensuring the security and confidentiality of the data transmitted. TSL is mandated, so no information flows unless the security is in place
Connected Agencies
The Healthmail system allows HSE and voluntary hospital staff to using a @hse.ie or @voluntaryhospital.ie addresses to communicate securely with GPs and pharmacists using a @healthmail.ie address. Below is a list of the hospitals and health agencies connected securely to Healthmail. Only accounts in the Healthmail network can email each other, it is not possible to send a mail outside the network e.g. a mail from a @healthmail.ie address to a @gmail.com address or @ipu.ie address will fail. Similarly, a mail from a @gmail.com address or @ipu.ie address will not send to a @healthmail.ie address.
Here is a list of hospitals and health agencies connected securely to Healthmail – as of February 2017.
Health Service Executive Clinicians
All HSE Regions are connected; this means you can communicate securely with clinicians in all HSE Hospitals and Primary Care Teams who have an @hse.ie email address.
