Overview

Live Attenuated Influenza Vaccines (LAIV) can be administered both within pharmacy premises and at an offsite location. Community Pharmacists are encouraged by the HSE to offer an LAIV service in a school setting in order to increase uptake amongst the recommended cohort. The HSE Toolkit to Support the Administration of the Live Attenuated Influenza Vaccine (LAIV) Fluenz nasal spray to Children in Schools or Community Setting by Primary Care outlines that where the composition of a pharmacy team providing a vaccination service in the school setting does not include two trained vaccinating pharmacists, the team must comprise of at least one trained vaccinating pharmacist with an appropriately trained healthcare worker trained in the management of anaphylaxis and basic life support, working under the clinical governance of the trained vaccinating pharmacist.

A key requirement of the healthcare workers role is to support the vaccinating pharmacist in the identification and management of anaphylaxis should it occur.

It is recommended that this course is completed every 2 years, in line with CPR training requirements.

Learners must

• Be employed in the community pharmacy offering the vaccination clinic;
• Work under the clinical governance of a trained vaccinating pharmacist and be trained on the pharmacy’s policies and procedures regarding the operation of this service at the chosen location; and
• Have/obtain a valid certificate in Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) in line with the requirements outlined at https://iiop.ie/cpr-training-information

Course content

The aim of this training module is to provide healthcare workers with the skills and knowledge to enable them to identify and manage anaphylaxis while working under the clinical governance of a trained vaccinating pharmacist, particularly when delivering a school based LAIV clinic. ​

On completion of this module learners will be able to​

• ​Describe anaphylaxis and outline its signs and symptoms, possible causes and pathophysiology
• Differentiate the symptoms of anaphylaxis from a mild allergic reaction and other possible reactions to vaccination
• Outline the legislation and governance requirements covering the treatment of anaphylaxis in both the pharmacy and/or a clinic setting offsite from the pharmacy premises.
• Identify all elements in the management of anaphylaxis
• Describe the role of the trained vaccinating pharmacist and healthcare worker in the treatment of anaphylaxis
• Explain the follow up procedure and reporting that are required after the treatment of anaphylaxis

Assessment

Learners, who complete the course and pass the assessment, will receive an IPU Professional Academy Certificate of Completion.
