New EU Regulations, EU 2019/6 in relation to veterinary medicinal products and EU 2019/4 in relation to the manufacture of medicated feed came into effect in the Republic of Ireland in January 2022. The Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine implemented these Regulations in S.I. 36 of 2022 European Union (Veterinary Medicinal Products and Medicated Feed) Regulations 2022. However, there are a number of matters in the Regulations that are to be determined by national law which has been done with the enactment of the Veterinary Medicinal Products, Medicated Feed and Fertilisers Regulation Act 2023.
The objectives of the Act are:
The development and introduction of the NVPS, which will be done by a Commencement Order in the coming months, supports Ireland’s ambition to continue improving customer online digital services in line with the Government’s National Digital Strategy and will provide greater assurance to our national and international trading partners and customers through greater regulatory oversight of Ireland’s agri-food production sector.
Additional benefits of the system will be:
This Act will, going forward, contribute to addressing the key One Health One Welfare societal challenge of Antimicrobial Resistance as well as Antiparasitic Resistance.
