Home » Pharmacy governance roles: Non-pharmacist owner
As a non-pharmacist pharmacy owner, I rely heavily on the expertise of the pharmacists I work with, especially those in governance roles like the superintendent and supervising pharmacist. It’s crucial to have an open, trusting relationship with mutual respect for each other’s roles and experience. I set the culture and ethos of the pharmacy, empowering my pharmacists to prioritise patient care in a safe and professional manner. Our main goal is always to do the right thing for our patients, ensuring compliance with legislation and guidance.
I believe in lifelong learning and constant improvement. As an accountant, I am part of a professional body that requires adherence to a code of conduct and continuous professional development, which gives me insight into the professional responsibilities pharmacists carry. I support my pharmacy team with risk assessments, listen to their concerns, and invest in necessary improvements to reduce risk and enhance patient care. My perspective as a non-pharmacist can offer fresh insights, and through collaborative discussions, we often find innovative solutions to challenges. My pharmacists know they have my full backing and support to always do the right thing.

Ensuring that pharmacists can take breaks is essential for their wellbeing and the quality of patient care. We have structured our staffing schedules to allow for adequate coverage during breaks. We also promote a supportive work environment where pharmacists feel comfortable taking the breaks they need without feeling pressured.

My advice would be to thoroughly understand the business aspects of running a pharmacy. It’s crucial to have a good accountant and to know the details and levers of your business. Building a strong, trustworthy team is essential. Work with people you respect and who share your commitment to patient care.
Â
Start by surrounding yourself with a reliable team. Understand your business inside out and be prepared to invest time in learning the intricacies of pharmacy operations. Trust and respect your team, and always prioritise patient care.
Â
Absolutely, it is a very rewarding role. I am particularly proud of the achievements of our pharmacy teams, such as their collaborative efforts during the COVID-19 vaccination campaign. Seeing the positive impact we have on our community’s health is incredibly fulfilling.
