Home » IPU National Pharmacy Conference — this month!
The IPU National Pharmacy Conference takes place this month. This year’s event will offer you an array of engaging speakers, networking opportunities, exhibitors and the chance to catch up with peers, while learning how you can maximise your potential.
The conference is jam packed with content from both international and Irish speakers, including a CPD session, and our motivational guest speaker, Jim Gavin — best known as the most successful manager in the history of Gaelic football, overseeing the Dublin Men’s Senior Team record five All-Ireland titles in a row. This session will be followed by the ‘Great Debate’ panel discussion which will focus on ‘The Right Care, Right Time, Right Place ’ — Where now for Community Pharmacy?’. This will take place prior to the Minister for Health’s address before the close of the conference.
The evening activities will commence at 7.00pm with pre-dinner drinks, before the President’s Dinner commences at 8.00pm. The meal will be followed by live music.
Registration will be open from 8.15am. Dermot Twomey, IPU President, will formally open the conference at 9.00am and welcome all the delegates. Our first speaker, Adam Osprey, will give his talk on ‘Think Pharmacy First — The Scottish Experience’, to provide insights into how the role of community pharmacists was expanded in Scotland to improve the primary healthcare system.
Mr Osprey will be followed by Lars-Åke Söderlund, Vice President of the Swedish Pharmaceutical Society, who will share his experience on the topic of ‘The Future of Pharmacy — The International Perspective’. Following a break and time to visit the exhibitors, Tony O’Brien, former Director General of the HSE will take to the stage to share his learnings on ‘Developing a Robust Primary Care Service – Lessons to be Learned’.
In addition, our CPD session will focus on ‘The Value of Having a Positive Pharmacy Practice’, this will be delivered jointly by Rachel Dungan and Jonathon Morrissey, who will provide valuable tips to put into practice in your pharmacy.
Following our break for lunch and further exhibition time, the conference will recommence at 2.00pm with a rousing motivational presentation from Jim Gavin focusing on ‘The Power of Teamwork — Maximising Results Under Pressure’. Mr Gavin is renowned for his successful management and winning streak with the Dublin men’s GAA football team, and is sure to provide us all with advice and tips, which can be applied in pharmacy to ensure teams work closer together to gain successful outcomes.
The ‘Great Debate’, entitled ‘Right Care, Right Time, Right Place – Where Now for Community Pharmacy?’ will kick off with a range of speakers, including Dermot Twomey, IPU President; Kate Mulvenna, Former Head of Pharmacy Function, PCRS; Jack Shanahan, IPU Review Editor and community pharmacist; Joanne Kissane, Registrar and Chief Officer, PSI; and our three key speakers from the morning session, Adam Osprey, Lars-Åke Söderlund and Tony O’Brien. This interactive session should provide for an engaging and thought-provoking panel discussion.
The Minister for Heath, Stephen Donnelly TD, will address the Conference after the lively debate, and the day will be concluded by Derek Reilly, Secretary General (Acting).
Before the main event kicks-off on Saturday there is an opportunity for those arriving the night before the conference to attend the informal ‘Meet and Greet’ session with music on Friday night in the conference area (free event). This is a perfect setting for attendees to network and catch up with colleagues. On Saturday night we will have the President’s Dinner, preceded with a drinks reception to start the celebrations for our 50th Anniversary. There are no official activities on the Sunday but there is plenty to do in the hotel and surrounding area for all the family.
