Home » HSE Health App puts your health in your hands
The HSE Health App, is one of the first projects being delivered as part of Digital For Care, Ireland’s health and social care digital framework. The app will give people a simple and secure way to access their health information and information about a range of HSE services. It aims to put patients and the people who use HSE services at the centre of their own care journey and enhance their experience of the health service by providing secure access to their health information.
The development of the first release of the HSE Health App was completed as planned. The HSE released the app in a limited way in December 2024 by inviting a cohort of between 1,000 and 1,500 people to test the app. Feedback was very positive and is helping to inform the future development of the app which will be available in app stores in quarter one 2025.
The first release is focusing on maternity services. Expectant mothers will be able to view their hospital appointments and access health and wellbeing information. The first version of the app also gives people access to their COVID-19 and flu vaccination records, has European Health Insurance cards and medical cards, and a list of medicines that have been reimbursed through HSE schemes. It also allows individuals to carry a list of their self-declared medications that they are taking. This is a way of providing patients with information on medications, which have been funded by the HSE under the various drugs schemes.
The App team worked with patients and clinicians to design the app, and a very successful pilot project took place involving a group of expectant mothers in Cork University Maternity Hospital in June 2024. Feedback from that pilot helped to refine and improve the app’s functionality before its wider release. The app was very well received during the pilot, with one expectant mother telling us, ‘‘Seeing my upcoming appointments in advance, and so quickly after they are made, is so helpful.”
To support the rollout, the app project team is working with maternity services around the country. The app will evolve over time, and it will be further enhanced over the coming months and years. Appointments for other acute services and other features will be added in due course. This is a significant programme of work, but while challenging, success is a key priority to ensure the app continues to evolve and makes a positive difference to patients and the public.
The launch of the app is a big step towards putting your health, in your hands and a great example of how the HSE is delivering Digital for Care.
From launch, the HSE Health App will be available in English and Irish. Other languages are being explored for future versions. Any member of the public aged 16 and over can use the app. After launch, the app can be downloaded from the App Store or Google Play.
