SMART Pharmacy Top Tip – Generic GMS Numbers

SMART Pharmacy Top Tips

Some patients do not have individual GMS numbers but are entitled to services, in these cases a generic GMS patient number is used. However, when a generic patient number is used, some services such as phased dispensing cannot be applied for. Homeless patients would be an example of a patient cohort who often avail of the generic GMS patient number. However, these patients are entitled to be registered under their own eligibility, and they should be encouraged to engage with their Homeless Services or liaison officer to arrange for issuing of a personal GMS number. This will then entitle them to full medical card services such as phased dispensing and access to the Discretionary Hardship Arrangement if offered by your pharmacy.
