We have had feedback from members following recent inspection visits carried out by the Pharmaceutical Society of Ireland (PSI – the Pharmacy Regulator). At these visits, the PSI identified areas for improvement regarding the following practice:
- Management and supervision of a retail pharmacy business;
- Record keeping: for example the pharmacist duty register and prescription register (daily audit); and
- Medication error management.
We would like to remind members that pharmacies must meet the record-keeping legal requirements outlined in the pharmacy and medicines legislation. In addition to this, we would like to stress the importance of maintaining records relating to medication incidents and the implementation of preventative and corrective actions to improve the safety of the pharmacy practice. If you had an inspection visit and would like to share your learnings with us, please drop us a line at pharmacists@ipu.ie.
