Antimicrobial Resistance and Infection Prevention Control (AMRIC) Updates

The HSE AMRIC team have published Issue 19 of the Green/Red report.

Appropriate antibiotic usage in the community is a key AMRIC action. With over 1.8 million views on the antibioticprescribing.ie website in the last year alone, the antibiotic prescribing guidelines are widely used in general practice. Amoxicillin and Augmentin are the most commonly prescribed antibiotics averaging >300,000 prescriptions each year. The top 10 dispensed antibiotics on the GMS scheme in 2022 are amoxicillin, augmentin, nitrofurantoin, cephalexin, doxycycline, flucloxacillin, clarithromycin, azithromycin, trimethoprim and phenoxymethylpenicillin. Green antibiotics make up 70% of these on the GMS scheme while the remaining 30% are red antibiotics.

The “Preferred Antibiotic use in the Community Green/Red Table” has been updated and is available here. This is available as a mouse mat which can be ordered at www.healthpromotion.ie.
