Antimicrobial Resistance and Infection Control (AMRIC) Updates

The HSE AMRIC team have published Issue 18 of the Green/Red report. Further information on this report and all previous reports can be found here. Key messages from this report include a reminder on the ‘Strive for five’ initiative and the HSE winter vaccination programme including the Pneumococcal vaccine.

  • Strive for five: If antibiotics are warranted the “Strive for 5 “initiative recommends a 5-day course of antibiotics for community acquired pneumonia, infective exacerbation of COPD, tonsillitis and acute bacterial sinusitis. Shorter courses (5 days) have been proven equally effective as 7 days courses in these conditions. Further details on the conditions mentioned above, and their treatment can be found here on the HSE – Antibiotic prescribing

  • Winter vaccination: The HSE Autumn Winter Vaccination programme was rolled out in Oct 2023. Older people, at-risk groups and health care workers are urged to get vaccinated and protect themselves against both Flu and COVID-19. The COVID-19 booster can be received 3 months from the last COVID-19 infection or booster. Pneumococcal vaccine is also available for all patients over 65 years and some in high-risk categories. Click here for further information about the Pneumococcal disease and vaccine.
