National Veterinary Prescription System (NVPS)

The full implementation of the NVPS that was due to commence on 1 June 2022 has been delayed, with the transition period being extended until 1 December 2022. As a result, until then:

  • Paper-based prescriptions are still valid for the supply of veterinary medicinal products to food-producing animals;
  • Antiparasitics for food-producing animals can be supplied without a prescription and can also be sold and supplied online; and
  • Antiparasitics for food-producing animals can continue to be advertised and be on display in your pharmacy.

All the other particulars outlined in the New Veterinary Regulations (EU 2019/6) and National Regulations (S.I. 36 of 2022) still apply. Further information regarding the extension of this transition period is available here.

The IPU’s New Veterinary Regulations webpage contains additional support documentation on this matter that includes a legal requirements for veterinary prescriptions information sheet and an IPU FAQ on Veterinary Medicines.
