IPU Product File

The IPU Product File is a valuable and vital source of information for any pharmacist. It contains information on over 61,000 products. Membership of the IPU gives you access to the IPU Product File and regular updates on the status of products listed. The IPU Product File is available by electronic download for IPU members.

Products listed on the IPU Product File include pharmacy and hospital related products ranging from all prescription and over the counter medicines to cosmetic and front of shop products.

There are just over 10,000 reimbursable items also listed on the IPU Product File. As well as pricing information, barcodes etc., the IPU Product File provides professional information on products. The professional information includes updates to Product Form, Strength, Active Ingredient, Legal Classification, Precautions and Warnings, Counselling Information and ATC (Anatomical, Therapeutic, Chemical) Codes.

The IPU Product File is incorporated into the majority of pharmacy and general practice IT systems and is vital for pharmacists and GP’s in the day to day running of their practices. It is also incorporated into many hospital clinical and pharmacy systems. Other users include wholesalers, drug companies, stock takers, health insurance companies and system vendors.

The IPU also provides Drug-Interaction and information files on drug use in Pregnancy and Breastfeeding, which are produced by the School of Pharmacy in Trinity College and are linked to the IPU Product File. These are based on the ATC classification system and are designed to warn pharmacists of the possibility of an interaction.

Our pharmacist liaises on a regular basis with organisations such as the Pharmaceutical Society of Ireland, Irish Medicine Board, Irish Pharmaceutical Healthcare Association, Hospital Pharmacists’ Association, School of Pharmacy TCD, Department of Health, and the Food Safety Authority of Ireland. This ensures that the IPU Product File department is up-to-date in all matters relating to ethical products including regulations, license changes, product or batch recalls, shortages, withdrawals, counterfeit medicines, safety information, adverse reactions etc.

The IPU Product File is updated daily with changes eg. new products, deletions, price changes etc. These monthly updates include barcode, pack size changes etc, as well as any relevant professional information for ethical products. This information is disseminated by CD Rom and email.

The IPU Product File is available under licence to non members of the IPU, with a fee attached to this. The fee for this depends on how the IPU Product File will be used.
